-
Visit the home, at least once without your loved one, prior to your decision so you are not distracted during the visit
-
Meet with the caregivers as well as with the provider. In most cases, the provider and caregiver are the same person
-
Smell the home – Does it smell musty or bad? Let your nose be the judge
-
Check for cleanliness – makes a big difference in long term health. Look in all the nook and crannies.
-
Check for smoke detectors and sprinkler systems – Safety is always first!
-
Check the quality of the meals being served – Visit unannounced, during the noon meal, preferably during the week. This is usually the largest meal of the day (and probably most important) your loved one gets every day. Is everything fresh? How is it prepared? Pre-processed (*Low Nutritional value) or fresh and wholesome? (**High Nutritional value)
-
Check the history of the home and the current provider with the county that it’s licensed in.
-
Last but not least, ask yourself this question: If you had to choose for yourself, would you live there?
