Recommendation of A Home for Mom and Dad

Adult Living Alternatives worked with A Home for Mom and Dad in placing our clients in his adult care home from November 2003 to the time of his move from the Portland area in October 2008.  The Provider’s understanding of medical issues, sense of humor and upbeat personality made it a pleasure to do business with.  Out of the 600+ adult care homes that our business works with, This home was unique because of the ability to inspire and challenge particularly our younger male clients.  With our older clients, the provider’s broad medical knowledge and helpful insight were always respected. The Provider’s interest in providing unique diversionary activities for the residents also set them apart from so many other adult care homes.

This feedback from a daughter who placed her father in this home expresses many of the reasons we thought so highly of him:

"…I have been very pleased with the high quality of care that has been provided for Dad starting the day of admission.  Dad’s care has been very difficult and challenging due to substantial behavior issues related to severe dementia.  Dad has hit, kicked and tried to bite the caregiver.  I know of no other care home in the community, including Multnomah County, where an operator would have the know-how and be willing to provide the kind of care that Dad requires.  Using a combination of experience, patience, compassion and humor to cajole Dad into getting the job done, whatever that may be.  They like to cook; tend to cook fresh foods including fruit and vegetables in season.  They have persisted with continued attempts to get Dad to take in calories.  Communication lines are wide open – I receive telephone calls, and emails with attached photos to download to see for myself how Dad is doing…  The care giving technique combines expertise and humor with an expectation that residents continue to be held responsible for those tasks that they are still capable of providing for themselves.  Truly this provider has captured the homelike atmosphere that we as trainers find so difficult to teach.  This foster home is the essence of a home.  Respect for residents is prevalent….” Per daughter, RN MS; 4/18/05

This is the first 'good' experience I have had with an assisted living residence or facility. Previously; there have been three times in the past in which I have had to help in finding a new "home" for a relative or friend. Each of these prior instances, once we (the family) had moved them into the home, it became quite apparent that the initial tour was much a show, not the reality of everyday living at the residence. Here has been the opposite of all the previous negative experiences. They closely monitor health issues, watch not only the basic physical requirements, but also work to make the house a happier, fresh environment. Instead of moving into a 'care' facility or medical building, it is run like a home and while at the hospitals and prior assisted living there were terrible issues which popped up (too disgusting to reveal, but think 'open festering wounds from non-care' kind of ick), the biggest issue I have seen here is that the ice cream might come late some evening. The manager stays active in the community and involves the residents in whatever activity they like to partake in. Most things are available including; puzzles, motorcycling, rides in a car throughout the area, gardening, etc.

Basically I asked the person I hired to find a home to look for somewhere he would put his father or mother in; and this is the only name he returned on the list, stating this home (above the others) stands out, and I can see why, because I did not place a relative here, I am staying here myself. All I can say, moving into a place like this was/is my biggest fear (I am only in my 30's), and this place has not only housed me, but aided in my recovery and future outlook. And it is true what they say, the food is very good. It may be worth staying here simply because of the quality of cooking and meals the manager/owner prepares. They are a great advocate and you can trust they have your best interest in mind. I cannot say enough...

The Best Care you will find!

My Husband was a Resident in this care home for three and a half years. Because of the great care and compassion that he received, he was spared a horrible death and was able to live a full rich life for another two and a half years before passing away peacefully in his sleep. For this, I will be forever grateful.

For, if it wasn't for the advocacy, understanding and medical expertise, myself and my family would not have been able to have those two plus years of a peaceful and fulfilling life with him. They went totally "Above and Beyond" what is considered normal in caring for my husband.

The owner even involved my husband in extraordinary activities which included teaching him to fly! All at no cost to myself or our family whatsoever, but rather out of the goodness of his heart.

Even after My Husband's peaceful passing, it was arranged for and on a beautiful summer morning, flew up to Mt. Hood and we spread my husband's ashes.

I cannot even begin to recommend this care home enough! The best decision I ever made, was allowing myself to place my husband 100 percent in the care of this home and it's staff.

The people in care in this home have the freshest meals made from scratch, and the meals are healthy! They are cared for as people rather than being warehoused. They get to go out and enjoy life by flying to the coast for breakfast, or drive around with their caregiver for a treat. As for the caregiver's credentials, he DEFINATELY knows what he's doing and has the experience he shows on his site as he teaches other caregivers as well. The residents get to go out and enjoy life and often actually improve while under his care in this home after they arrive. The caregiver is very open and genuine. He welcomes family to drop in and view his facility. This is a wonderful place for anyone to enjoy care and a dignified lifestyle. This place is HIGHLY recommended, and WELL worth the money.
